Quest to Learn

Quest to Learn is the first school in the country organized around systems thinking and the principles of game design. It was developed by a group of forward-thinking educators* from the Institute of Play committed to creating a critically relevant, engaging, youth-oriented, rigorous, and learning-centered approach to education.

The remix** of Quest to Learn in Chicago is a collaborative and creative endeavor that builds from and on current understandings of the essential components and configurations of the Quest to Learn model.

This effort expands an existing community of practice. Quest "educators" teach and learn from each other, collaborate to enrich and improve student learning and development, pool and extend resources, constantly evaluate the effectiveness of their work in order to improve its quality, and celebrate and share products of their work.

These mission-centered educators work in and across their spaces to demonstrate the effectiveness of this innovative approach to teaching and learning. Their collective work contributes to the model and advances the development of powerful curricula, assessment, professional development, student support, school culture, and instructional practices.

As the Institute of Play, Quest to Learn, and CICS ChicagoQuest partners deepen their work, they are committed to sharing best practices, lessons learned, and ongoing questions as they connect with the broader educational community through observation, professional development, discussion, critique, and collaboration.

* "Educators" is defined broadly to include teachers, leaders, game designers, etc.  Any and all adults involved and invested in this effort to support student learning in new ways.

** "Remix" is used intentionally instead of replication to acknowledge that adaptations or "riffs" on the original design will be made thoughtfully, based on differences in students, spaces, places, and resources.
